Cricket fans set for release of M.S. Dhoni biopic

dhoni-batFans of Indian cricket superstar Mahendra Singh Dhoni are expected to flock to cinemas this weekend as a film charting the player’s meteoric rise to fame opens across the UK.

M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story tells of how the cricketer went from being a budding amateur working as a train ticket inspector in West Bengal, to the current captain of India’s national T20 and one-day international teams.

Directed by Neeraj Pandey and distributed by Fox Star Studios, the Bollywood movie will receive the widest domestic and international release of any Indian film to date, opening on 4,500 screens across 60 countries.

Sushant Singh Rajput plays the title role of Dhoni, while the supporting cast features veteran actors such as Anupam Kher and Bhumika Chawla, alongside new talent including Kiara Advani and Disha Patani.

Regarded as a national hero within his home country, Dhoni is also celebrated in the UK and around the world as one of the sport’s most iconic stars, worthy of praise for his talents on the cricket pitch and for realising his dreams in the face of adversity. The film tells the story of a common man, gifted with extraordinary talent, who overcame every challenge in order to achieve greatness in the game, winning worldwide adulation along the way.

Vijay Singh, CEO of Fox Star Studios, said: “MS Dhoni: The Untold Story is going to be the widest release for any Indian film in India and internationally. It will also be the widest release for a Hindi film (dubbed) in Tamil and Telugu.”

Plans to release Punjabi and Marathi versions of the movie have now been scrapped due to time constraints.

Arun Pandey, the film’s producer, confirmed: “Given the deadline to make the widest ever release happen in the history of Indian cinema, we are not being able to get the Marathi and the Punjabi versions ready in time.”
